Undergraduate research opportunities have opened doors for Em Coulton.

The History honours graduate has been working closely with Dr. Michael Dawson on a paper titled "'Hippie Go Home' Local Responses to Western Tourism on the Overland Route, 1950s-1970s.” The pair recently travelled to Toronto for the Canadian Historical Association's annual conference, where they presented their research.

"During this research process, Dr. Dawson let me spread my wings, and by doing so, I was able to strengthen my skills," said Coulton.

Attending the CHA conference gave Coulton, who graduated from STU in May, the opportunity to network with historians and PhD students, and gain insight into academic conferences and the publishing process.

"As someone who hopes to one day be a professor publishing articles and attending conferences, it was incredibly helpful to see how the process goes," they said.

This fall, Coulton will begin their master's in history at the University of Toronto, studying medieval history. This graduate work is funded by a prestigious SSHRC Canadian Graduate Research Scholarship, which was made possible by their opportunity to engage in undergraduate research at STU.

"My time at STU has helped me grow into the person I am today. I have never met individuals as helpful and encouraging as those who work in the STU history department," said Coulton.

"It is because of them that I am where I am today."
