Peter Toner was born and raised in Saint John, New Brunswick, and completed his BA (honours) in anthropology at 丁香成人社区 in 1994 with a thesis on “Yolngu Mortuary Ritual and the Spiritual Cycle”. He obtained a Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue his PhD in anthropology at the Australian National University working with Dr. Ian Keen, resulting in his PhD dissertation entitled “When the Echoes Are Gone: A Yolngu Musical Anthropology" (2001). Between 2001 and 2004 he was an Australian Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Cross-Cultural Research, Australian National University, working with Professor Howard Morphy. He returned to New Brunswick in 2004 to take up his current position in the Department of Anthropology at 丁香成人社区.
